The town of Fairview will observe Independence Day with an old-fashioned celebration on Wednesday, July 4, 2012.  This year’s celebration is themed “Remembering Our Hometown Heritage.”  Festivities include the Ray Hedrick 5K Fun Run, the grand parade at 10 a.m., a concert by the Fairview Community Band followed by an exhibit from the Raptor Rehabilitation Center, and a speaking program with guest speaker George Yost at 1 p.m.  Yost, a Fairview native, is part of the Yost family that played a big role in the history of Fairview, including Fielding “Hurry Up” Yost, legendary University of Michigan football coach.  (An exhibit regarding the life of Fielding “Hurry Up” Yost will be on display throughout the day in the Town Hall.)

Following the speaking program, games and contests for all ages will be provided, including a cake walk. Throughout the afternoon, several artisans and exhibitors will display their crafts and/or hobbies. Also during this time, any and all musicians are welcome to bring their instruments and take part in an acoustic jam session in the Town Hall. Several talented musicians from the area will be in the Town Hall during this time and would love for you to join them!

The remainder of the evening includes a “Spinning and Strumming” demonstration of dulcimers and wool spinning, music from the bluegrass group Almost a Song and the group Middle of Nowhere, a variety show including music and historical recitations, as well as a presentation from Boy Scout Troop #22 and “Flags of Our Freedom,” a patriotic presentation by Mark Jones. The celebration will conclude with a fireworks display at 10 p.m.

Throughout the day, several community organizations will sell concessions, including breakfast served by the Baker’s Dozen beginning at 7:30 a.m. until they are sold out, and Heavenly Hoagies, a local business partnering with the Fairview Fourth of July Committee; otherwise, all activities are free of charge!

Organizations, groups, or individuals are welcome to participate in the parade. Floats will be judged on their overall appearance, originality, and best portrayal of this year’s theme.
