Calling all Disc Golfers
June 16, 2014We don’t play… we win.
Competition loves no one. If you’re serious, extreme, and for real, I dare you to prove it.
The first of three Marion County summer PDGA Tournaments is this month. Can you handle it? Do you even know what PDGA means?
Professional Disc Golf Association will host the WVDGA Club Championship on Saturday, June 21; the West Virginia Cup on Aug. 2- 3; and the Seth Burton Memorial on Saturday, Sept. 20.
Men and women travel all over the United States and the world to compete in Disc Golf events. And seeing as how there are only 20-25 professional Disc Golfers in existence, the field is wide open!
Specifically, the West Virginia Disc Golf Association Club Championship is a C-tier. This means it costs less to enter and the prizes are smaller. Beginners should take note! And for the advanced, this could be a pretty easy prize. This is a one day event, just to get your feet wet.
From there we go on to the West Virginia Cup in August. Another C-Tier event, but it’s played a bit differently. It is a team-based Match Play tournament. Each team consists of 6 players- 2 professionals, 2 amateurs, 1 woman and 1 master.
Match play is a special format where winning the hole, not stroke, determines who wins the match. Players can Win (3 points) Tie (1 point) or Lose (0 points) and bring these points back to their team in the hopes of a chance for victory!
The WV Cup was won last year by the Pittsburgh Vipers (returning again this year to defend their title). As a Marion Countian and West Virginian, this is unacceptable.
Rivalry! Emotion! Indignation!
Maybe you can’t play, but you sure can support. This is a sport, let’s see the fans!
Once you’ve gone through these tournaments, come back in September for the B-Tier Seth Burton Memorial Tournament. B-Tier? It means better prizes! And if you’ve prepped with the WC Cup and the WVDGA Club Championship, you just might win.
Don’t forget! The Marion County Disc Golf Courses at Morris Park- Orange Crush and Seth Burton Memorial- are open all year and are completely free.
So, to recap… The first tourney is this month!
If you think you can handle it, take a stab at the WVDGA.
