Coal for Christmas: A Holiday Experience at Coal Country

Pleasant Valley, W.Va. — Most people try to avoid getting coal for Christmas, but whether you’ve been naughty or nice, you can enjoy a Christmas coal mining experience at Coal Country Miniature Golf this holiday season.

For the first time in its history, Coal Country Miniature Golf will open for Christmas at Coal Country from 5-9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12. This one-day event will have Christmas lights lining the miniature golf pathways, hot chocolate for purchase and unique activities. For $8, guests can play a round of mini golf and take a virtual ride of their choice: down into a coal mine, into an ice world, snowboarding or hanging out with penguins. In case of inclement weather, guests will also have the choice to take two rides for $8.

“Our Italian-Appalachian roots are very important around here, and coal is a big part of that,” Mike Rohaly, president of the Northern Appalachian Coal Mining Heritage Association, said. “We want to add to that Italian-Appalachian Christmas spirit and give families a fun and affordable holiday experience.”

Rohaly, along with NACMHA, an organization dedicated to preserving the coal mining heritage of Northern West Virginia, will also host the Coal Miners’ Swap Meet in observation of National Miners Day. The day is traditionally observed on Dec. 6 and commemorates the Monongah mine disaster that killed 362 miners on Dec. 6, 1907. The swap meet will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 14 in Arts and Antiques Marketplace, in conjunction with the Feast of the Seven Fishes Festival. Attendees can buy, sell, swap or have coal mining memorabilia appraised.

A Week of Holiday Cheer in Marion County
These Christmas coal mining events are part of a larger slate of holiday festivities in Marion County:
