Hashtag Hashrun
January 21, 2020It’s West Virginia, so it’s no surprise that hunting is a thing around these here parts. What you might be surprised to know is … it’s always rabbit season.
I’m not talking about your typical rabbits, though. Pay close attention…
There’s a hare (or a hare-like person or a person-like hare) who takes off! The hounds (hound-like people or people-like hounds), being the kind hunters they are, give the hare a 15-minute head start before springing to action! The chase is on.
This isn’t just some hunting scenario. This is typical exercise in Marion County… but it’s not. Remember when you were a kid and you had fun? It’s kinda like that.
These kid-like adults (or adult-like kids) are part of the West Virginia Hash House Harriers (WVHHH), playing this game of tag they call hashing.
Why hashing? The hare isn’t just trying to make a clean getaway. He or she makes chalk checkmarks along the way to leave a trail, or a couple of trails 😉, for the hounds. Runners and walkers average anywhere from 4 to 6 miles trying to track the hare down.
Want to play?
Get some activewear at Britain & Brooks, some deodorant at Health Naturally and you’re ready to play!
These kids-at-heart get together to play four times a week: Thursdays at 6 p.m. (Fairmont Ave. Price Cutter); Saturdays (Fairmont Senior High School parking lot) and Sundays (Fairmont Ave. Price Cutter) at 9 a.m.; Tuesdays at 6 p.m. (every other week is at the Atrium on Morgantown Ave. Alternating Tuesdays are at varying locations in or near town.)
And if you’re not already excited to make new friends and play, you might be interested to know that there is almost always a beer and water stop during the Tuesday runs 😉
Alcohol concerns? Rest assured, this is a family-friendly group that focuses on running first!
Whether you’re a resident, a visitor, a visitor-like resident or a resident-like visitor, you’re more than welcome to come to play!
