To Splurge or not to Splurge…A Wedding Conundrum

A wedding is basically one big party and one big spending spree. Dresses, suits, food, decorations, favors— there’s so much! In this whirlwind of a spending spree, what shouldn’t you splurge on?

Just Don’t

* An open bar- Dehydration, intoxication, exorbitance— none of these are good words.
* The big exit- Is there that much of a difference between a nice car and a hummer limousine? Well… yes. One is unnecessary and the other isn’t.
* The bridal arrival- Guests do not typically gather outside the venue to see the bride arrive to her wedding. It’s assumed that she’s already at her amazing venue, like:High Gate Carriage House-2 - Copy

* Photo booth- Cute? Yeah! But actually, you already have a professional photographer to handle all the picture taking.

* Ice sculptures- Not only is this a bit dated, but a bit over the top. Use photographs for decoration (They’ll last much longer) or ice cubes to keep your drinks cool (It’s much more practical).

* Pre-reception snacks- This would be OK if you’re not also serving soup, salad, appetizers, 3 entree choices, cake, a dessert table, or a full buffet and drinks.
Let’s not go food crazy. No one needs to be eating this much, not even at the wedding of the year. So keep it light and stay on track, for budget and calories.

wedding picture 2* The Dress- A designer dress might not be such a great idea. Remember that once you’ve bought your dress you’ll still need shoes, a veil, undergarments, makeup, hair, jewelry, nails and alterations! (Your budget for your dress might not include this entire list, but it should definitely include alterations.)

Sweet Memories Antique Mall (for you vintage fiends)
Goodwill (for you bargain hunters, excuse me, bargain killers)

* Alcohol- Is it really a need? If so, consider a signature cocktail – a favorite of the bride and groom.  Hint: it doesn’t even have to be alcoholic, just different to be remembered.

* Bridesmaid dresses- If, with all these tips on what not to splurge on, you save some money, consider helping Dressthem out with the cost of the dress or shoes.

* Centerpieces- Less is more [insert phrase here] (a) money saved (b) eloquent (c) demure  (d) all of the above.

* Bridal bouquet- Flowers are the obvious choice. Want an unusual or out-of-season flower – consider mixing fresh with artificial.  Trust us, you won’t be able to tell the difference – except in price!  Don’t forget there is always the baubles and bling bouquet.

* Guest favors- Your guests have been treated to great food, good music and an amazing time. They shared in the first day of the rest of your life. Instead of favors that will get left behind or spilled in a purse, consider donating to a favorite charity on behalf of your guests.
