Battle for the Bridge

Fairmont, WV

As part of the Jones-Imboden Raid, the largest battle of the Civil War in northern West Virginia was fought in Fairmont. A battle of the suspension bridge took place on April 29, 1863, at the site of the Palatine foundry. The bridge (1852–1908) spanned the Monongahela River between Fairmont and Palatine. The marker is located at Palatine Park, at the junction of Everest Drive (east) and Water Street.
