Fun & Golf-esque Games (Fairmont)

Disc Golf Off Pleasant Valley Road, Fairmont, WV 26554
Challenge your travel companions to a match of skill! Morris Park has 2 prime courses to choose from: Orange Crush and Seth Burton Memorial. Both are free and open year-round. There’s an annual Ice Bowl contest for cold-weather competitors, and the Seth Burton Memorial tournament brings in competitors from all around.

Coal Country Mini Golf 22 Coal Country Lane, Fairmont, WV 26554
Pick up your putter and prepare to tap your way through WV history! The Coal Country Mini Golf course includes coal-theme holes, where you can learn about the region's coal heritage while enjoying a round of mini golf.

Rail Trails
Fairmont’s old rail tracks map out a great bike path! The West Fork River Trail snakes 16 miles along the river and over historic covered bridges. Bring along fishing poles and stop to cast your line. Or take MCTRAIL 3 miles from the Prickett’s Fort State Park living history museum into small-town Fairmont.

Stop at a classic hot dog stand or another charming old-fashioned eatery in Fairmont and head out for a picnic at Valley Falls State Park. Watch seasoned kayakers brave the mighty waterfalls from the banks of the river, then digest as you take a short hike  or mountain bike ride around the hills. You can also angle for some fish!

Swim & Splash
Take a dip and ride the swirling waters of the wave pool at East Marion Park. You can even slip down the waterslide to dunk into the water below. Afterward, enjoy a game of tennis, horseshoes, basketball, pickleball or softball, or just take a hike on the trails and let the kids climb around the playground. Or, get even more soaked at Palatine Park's Splash Park, where water spurts out from everywhere! Run through erupting ground geysers, blasts of showers from flower sculptures and squirts from sprinklers.

The View from Above (Morgantown)

WVU Zip-Line Canopy Tour 2001 Rec Center Dr., Morgantown, WV 26506
Fly through the treeline with WVU’s forest canopy tour. Harness up and swing more than 30 miles per hour down 4 swooping ziplines, and trek across one rope skybridge, all while getting a bird’s eye view of the WV wilderness. The rush tops off with a rope rappel back to the ground below.

Cooper’s Rock State Forest 61 County Line Drive, Bruceton Mills WV 26525
From atop the main overlook, gaze out over the stunning Cheat River Gorge. Hike along the boulder-covered trail lines, which blossom with vibrant color in the spring and fall. Stop into the on-site restaurant and pick up a to-go meal, and trek out to the rustic shelters for a picnic while you enjoy the sounds of nature. The kids can swing around on the playground, and you can browse the unique souvenirs at the Trading Post.

Stop in at Dorsy’s Knob State Park to trek up to the summit of Sky Rock, which overlooks all of Downtown Morgantown from a tranquil outdoor space. Bring up a lunch and enjoy the scenery. Stay for a hike, or a round of disc golf. Open 8am to dusk.

Rafting the Whitewater Rapids (Preston County)

Rafting the Cheat River 2764 N Preston Hwy, Albright, WV 26519
Paddle through the swirling whitewater and alongside flowing waterfalls and scenic landscape. In the spring, the Cheat River canyon swells with 13 miles of intense whitewater rapids, which you and a team can pound right through with some paddle coordination and a great guide from Cheat River Outfitters. In the summer, the 7-mile Cheat Narrows stretch offers a run the kids can enjoy, even in their own 1-man inflatable kayaks.

From the collection of tiny to twisted water slides, to the lil’ tykes splash pool, the Lewis County Park Aquatic Center has a section of water suited for everyone in the family. There are lined lanes for lap swimmers, and 2 diving boards that plunge jumpers into the 12-foot open swimming area. Stop in for lunch at the snack bar and enjoy some time splashing or just relaxing in the sun.
