July 9: National Sugar Cookie Day

Today is National Sugar Cookie Day. Sugar cookies are easy to make and are one of the most popular types of cookies, especially during holidays.

The origins of cookies date back to the 7th century in Persia, along with the cultivation of sugar.  However, the American-version of the sugar cookie originated back in the 1700’s from German settlers in Nazareth Pennsylvania, they perfected a sugar cookie recipe called the Nazareth Sugar Cookie also known as the Amish Sugar Cookie. On September 5, 2001, the sugar cookie became the official cookie of the state of Pennsylvania.
