Marion County: A Dessert Destination
July 13, 2021
There’s nothing sweeter than a trip to Marion County! Although our area is known for our beloved pepperoni rolls and hot dogs, we’ve also got a long lineup of unique (and delicious) dessert spots to cure your sugar cravings!
Did you know July is National Ice Cream Month? There are few things more symbolic of summer than a cone of ice cream. Spend a few days taste-testing this frozen treat from some of our favorite dessert joints.
Poky Dot
A uniquely Fairmont establishment, The Poky Dot is a must-visit when traveling through Marion County! The restaurant’s interior is just as eccentric as the menu. When you arrive at The Poky Dot, take in the bright red British telephone booth and colorful polka dot guardrails. Once inside the restaurant, marvel at the hand-painted walls, quirky furniture, and colorful dishware. But the fun doesn’t stop there! From the famous banana split, which features nine pounds of ice cream, to massive handspun milkshakes topped with donuts, candies, and sprinkles, the presentation is just as bold as the restaurant. If frozen treats aren’t for you, try a slice of one of The Poky Dot’s cheesecakes. Choose from the restaurant’s extensive list of homemade flavors, including birthday cake, blueberry, brown sugar cinnamon, and chocolate chip. Listed as one of the “101 Unique Places to Dine in West Virginia,” The Poky Dot is a Marion County classic.
Dairy Creme Corner
No summer night is complete without a massive soft-serve cone from Dairy Creme Corner in Fairmont. Boasting the “biggest cones in town,” this shop is a regional favorite! In addition to their skyscraper cones, DCC (as the locals call it) is also famous for its avalanches — ice cream mixed with your choice of toppings. Popular flavor combinations include cinnamon toast crunch, peanut butter and jelly, hot fudge brownie, and peppermint patty. If you are in the mood to try something a little bit lighter, DCC offers Sno-Biz, which is a favorite brand of shaved ice.
