It’s ALMOST the Most Wonderful Time of the Year in Marion County
November 1, 2017
From paint-your-own pottery activities to owl banding, Marion County has many ways to celebrate the brisk, refreshing month of November.
A bird in one hand …
… is worth a thousand words at the Saw-Whet Owl Banding event at Valley Falls State Park. Join bird enthusiast Joey Herron as he catches, bands, and releases these tiny animals on Nov. 3-4 and 10-11. Each bird is about the size of a softball! This event is free, but you must register in advance by emailing wvsawwhet@yahoo.com
Indoor Adventures
Chilly and rainy outside? Spend a winter weekend at West Fork Pottery in downtown Fairmont. The studio shares space with Joe n Throw, which combines handmade stoneware and classes with coffee and delicious meals.
Nativibes in Mannington also warms the coldest day. Sign up for classes or shop for scrimshaw jewelry, original paintings, and one-of-a-kind accessories.
Mountain Creative is especially fun for hangouts. The paint-your-own-pottery studio in Fairmont entertains kids and friends alike. Heck, go solo— you’ll have a great time, too!
Family Feasts
The season of Thanksgiving is upon us. Why not treat the family (or visiting relatives!) to some Marion County flavor? Say-Boy Restaurant in Fairmont serves steak and popular American cuisine.
Pufferbelly’s Ice Cream Station in Fairmont pleases families with its sandwiches, classic appetizers, and— best of all— festive desserts. Another fun pick is DJ’s 50s and 60s Diner. It’s delightfully retro, and so are the meals. Order anything from meatloaf and burgers to banana splits!
No family visit is complete without a trip to The Poky Dot, either. The whimsical diner is famous for its enormous portions, both for entrees and desserts. Bring lots of relatives— you’ll need help clearing those plates.
Christmas is Coming
On Nov. 24, Celebration of Lights brightens Morris Park in Fairmont with more than a mile of Christmas illuminations every weekend until Dec. 29. Get ready to light up your holiday spirit!
Another magical event is the 18th-century Christmas Tour at Pricketts Fort. From Nov. 25-Dec. 2, tours at Pricketts Fort showcase lovely colonial decor and traditional crafts.
