Rail-trails are former railroad corridors/old train tracks that have been re-purposed for recreational public use. The West Virginia Rails-to-Trails Council, a statewide advocacy and networking organization, works to promote and help create rail-trails.
Four rail-trails cross Marion County: the MCTrail (2.5 miles, Pricketts Fort), West Fork River/ Ralph S. Larue Trail (14.5 miles, Shinnston to Worthington to Fairmont), Joel McCann Memorial Trail (1.5, Mannington) and the Mon River RailTrail (18 miles, Pricketts Fort to Morgantown). A highlight of the MCTrail is a lit, 1,200 foot tunnel known as Meredith Tunnel.
