Pricketts Fort at Christmastime might just be the most magical place! Prepare your mind and home for the season with the Marion County Master Gardeners. Learn ho to support and maintain flintlock and percussion guns for hunting and shooting! Students will be making small horns, cap holder, ball pouches, screw drivers and oilers. Learn to make and finish a usable powder horn for hunting and reenacting! Students will learn the basic layout, cutting, carving and file work. The 14th Annual Run to Read Half Marathon begins at 1 pm with race day registration at 11:30 am. The course is a 1% grade, starting on the paved MCPARC Trail and running through the Meredith tunnel before going back to Pricketts Fort. The second section will be run on the Mon River Trail, and the race will finish on this trail. (USATF sanctioned.)
The cost to participate is $30 by Oct. 13, $40 by Dec. 29 and $45 after Dec. 29.
All proceeds will benefit Literacy Volunteers of Marion County (a United Way agency), which provides free tutoring to adults and children in basic reading, math, ESL (English as a second language) and GED preparation.
The Augusta County Militia will explore the life and times of early Appalachian pioneer Joseph Doddridge, demonstrating several crafts and conducting militia operations.
Lecture: Artist George Caleb Bingham by Dr. Marian Hollinger.
Enjoy a relaxing afternoon in the Pricketts Fort Visitor Center as Dr. Marian Hollinger discusses the life and art of artist George Caleb. Bingham’s art is the earliest and finest body of work depicting frontier life in America. (This lecture is free to the public.)
Enjoy a full day of traditional music at the Fort! Be sure to check out the jam session in the park, too.
Bring the kids to the park and let them discover the wonders of nature, everything from bugs and flowers to birds and trees. Your child will have fun while they learn! This program is for children ages 10 to 13. The program is free, but children must be registered. To do so, go to www.prickettsfort.org/register or call the office at 304-363-3030.
