March Madness In Marion
February 22, 2017
March is an exciting month!
Buzzer-beaters, unlikely heroes and unthinkable upsets! That’s right, March Madness is getting closer and closer. For many, the NCAA tournament is the most glorious time of the year. Our very own Fairmont State Fighting Falcons are even getting in on the action.
And just as exciting, Girl Scout cookies are delivered in March. Talk about anticipation . . .bring on the Thin Mints!
In Marion County we also have some highly anticipated events during the month. So mark your calendars!
No March is complete without a trip to McAteers for their famous St. Patrick’s Day Dinner of corned beef, cabbage, potatoes and roll. Funny thing about this years dinner. St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Friday. Since it is during Lent, most Catholics abstain from eating meat. However, Tim was able to get a special dispensation to serve his highly anticipated dinner. Go Irish!
Marching music
Spend an evening with Grand Ole Opry legend John Conlee on March 3 at Sagebrush Round-Up! His soulful, melancholy voice has enchanted country music fans for years with hits like “Lady Lay Down” and “Rose Colored Glasses.”
Sagebrush Round-Up also has live music every Saturday. Get a home-cooked dinner, hit the dance floor, and listen to guest performers and local musicians.
Next up: Katherine Siochi, classical pianist and harpist from New York City. Her virtuoso recitals have dazzled audiences at Carnegie Hall and NPR; now it’s your turn on March 26, when she comes to St. Peter the Fisherman Church.
Cookin’ up a storm
This month, get hearty servings of delicious history at Pricketts Fort. The catered Buckwheat Cake Breakfast on March 25 greets spring with the cheerful aroma of hot flapjacks, melting butter, and warm syrup.
Hang around, because Julia Child — America’s “First Lady of Food” — will pay a visit, too! Learn all about the beloved chef who demystified French cuisine on her entertaining TV show.
Weddings 101
Congrats — you’re engaged! Now what? The Bridal Show answers that question with help from event planners, chefs, and vendors. Highlights include wedding cake samples, a fashion show, and prizes. If this makes you say, “I do,” then be at the Fairmont Armory on March 26.
April: the long view
Immerse yourself in colonial culture, lore, and tradecraft at Prickett Fort’s School of the Longhunter. Demonstrations, reenactments, lectures, and workshops go from April 6-9, so start planning ahead!
And keeping in line with history, plan on a day at the Mountain State History Expo on April 1. It’s a great opportunity to explore the county’s stately courthouse.
