Francis H. Pierpont Day

Francis H. Pierpont, the “Father of West Virginia” and Governor of Restored Virginia from 1861 -1862 was born on this day. He was elected Governor by all 77 Representatives at the Second Wheeling Convention.

He also established free education to all which did not exist in Virginia. In 1865 he established what is now known as Fairmont State University.

A short reception will take place at the Marion County Visitor Center:

The Obituary of Gov. Pierpont by Rev. Richard Bowyer
Cutting of the cake by Blair Montgomery and JoAnn Lough

Open to the public.

Tours will also be given at the Marion County Museum
