Harriet Wilson Whitely – Last Living Slave

 2:00 pm – members of the GFWC Woman’s Club of Fairmont will dedicate a headstone placed on the grave of Harriet Wilson Whitely in Evergreen Cemetery on the 75th anniversary of her death.

Mrs. Whitely, known as “Aunt Hat,” was believed to be the last person born into slavery in 1855 in Marion County.

3:00 pm – a program about her life will be presented at the Fleming Mansion by Dr. Raymond Alvarez, a local historian specializing in early 20th Century Fairmont.

Light refreshments will be served.  A limited number of the 2016 Spring Goldenseal Magazines, which features the story of Harriet Whitely, will be available for attendees.
