Julia Pierpont, wife of Governor of the Restored Virginia Francis H. Pierpont and considered the Father of WV, is honored on this day as the originator of Decoration Day now known as Memorial Day.

The day begins with a breakfast with Julia and Gov. Pierpont in attendance. Following a short program, attendees can proceed to the historic Woodlawn Cemetery, where the Pierpont family is buried, for a presentation of the Marion County Honor Guard #748.

Period music and a civil war exhibit and refreshments will also be provided at the Marion County Historical Society Museum.

Full Breakfast will begin at 9:00 am at Veteran’s Square (320 Adams Street, Ground Floor).
At approximately 11:00 am, the event will move to the Woodlawn Cemetery in Fairmont so that the participants can take part in honoring the Civil War soldiers by placing flags on the grave markers.
