Explore West Virginia’s Flavorful Legacy on the WV Pepperoni Roll Trail

The pepperoni roll — bread and pepperoni baked together — is a West Virginia staple, a beloved local delicacy and the official state food. Bring your appetite and hit the road on the first-ever West Virginia Pepperoni Roll Trail to discover your favorite version of this tasty snack!

The pepperoni roll was developed deep in the coal mines by Italian immigrants who found a clever way to simplify their lunch — baking bread and pepperoni together for a meal that was both convenient and delicious. It may sound simple, but the flavor is incredible.

The Great Pepperoni Debate

We know the pepperoni roll was born in the coal mines, but which one exactly? Marion County claims it was theirs, while Harrison County insists it was one of their own. So, we tried to settle the debate by figuring out who commercialized it first, but that didn’t help much — Marion County stands by Country Club Bakery, and Harrison County swears by Tomaro’s Bakery. While we may never agree on the details, we can all agree on two very important things. All pepperoni rolls are delicious, and we need to share them with the world!

Now, the Marion County CVB and the Clarksburg CVB have come together to showcase the original bakeries and creative new recipes on the most savory trail in West Virginia.
