Global Treasure Hunt Comes to Marion County with Middle of Everywhere GeoTour

PLEASANT VALLEY, W.Va. – Marion County as it welcomes the Middle of Everywhere GeoTour, a treasure-hunting trail launching May 3 in anticipation of GeoWoodstock XXI—North America’s largest annual Geocaching event.

Geocachers from all around the world will travel to north central West Virginia to attend GeoWoodstock, the largest annual Geocaching event and conference in North America, during the weekend of May 23-24. Residents in Marion County and the surrounding area will get to explore this GeoWoodstock trail much sooner, starting at 10 a.m. May 3.

The Middle of Everywhere GeoTour, officially registered through Geocaching.com, features 20 unique locations around Marion County, from restaurants and murals to mining history and outdoor recreation. Some of the locations include MonValley Vineyards, No. 9 Mine Memorial, Papa Joe’s Famous Meats, Pricketts Fort State Park and many more. Those who find 16 caches will qualify for a trackable Geocoin, available for pickup during GeoWoodstock XXI weekend, May 23-25. Those who find all 20 caches will get a digital souvenir on their Geocaching profile.

“With its exclusive digital souvenir, the Middle of Everywhere GeoTour highlights our county’s unique places and invites Geocachers from around the world to discover Marion County,” said Leah Smith, executive director of the Marion County Convention and Visitors Bureau – a sponsor of the event and trail.

Anyone can participate in Geocaching for free by downloading the official Geocaching app. For information on the GeoTour and a full list of caches, visit www.GeoWoodstockXXI.com/GeoTour.

“We’re so excited to showcase the amazing history, heritage and recreational opportunities this area has to offer more than 5,000 people from all over the world who are coming to this event,” Mark Webb, lead organizer for GeoWoodstock XXI, said. “Thanks to our amazing tourism partners throughout the region, we can guarantee this won’t be anyone’s last visit to West Virginia.”

Geocaching is a world-wide scavenger hunt that challenges participants to find hidden containers, or caches, using GPS technology. The hobby started in 2000 with a handful of caches placed for participants to find and has grown exponentially, with over 3 million caches hidden worldwide.

GeoWoodstock is an annual event that changes locations each year. This year, it will be hosted at Mylan Park over Memorial Day weekend and is expected to bring in more than 5,000 Geocaching enthusiasts. Featuring live presentations, vendors and activities, the event is an opportunity for new and seasoned cachers to connect and learn the latest happenings within the game.

Marion County businesses and residents can expect a surge of visitors before, during and after the event weekend.

The event is free to attend. For more information on GeoWoodstock and to register, visit http://www.coord.info/GCANXX1.
